David Parry

Forty years rebuilding businesses that work.

David Parry

David Parry is the founder of SmartBRG and the architect of the OSCA (Operational Strategy & Capability Assessment) framework. Over forty years he has worked with more than fifty businesses across the UK, Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East, guiding founders through scale-up, supporting PE-backed organisations through integration and value creation, and stepping in as an interim director where leadership transitions require focused support. The recurring finding across that work has been consistent: most of the value left on the table during a growth plan, an acquisition or a leadership handover is not financial. It is structural. OSCA was built to find it.

What David Does Today

David works with a small number of clients each year across four scenarios: founder-led businesses preparing for growth, investment or exit; PE operating partners running structural diagnostics on portfolio companies; M&A advisors stress-testing acquisition theses; and incoming CEOs or NEDs needing fast, honest clarity on the business they have taken on. Each engagement begins with an OSCA, a cross-functional diagnostic that surfaces the structural realities standard due diligence rarely reaches: where leadership perception is ahead of operational reality, where the commercial model carries hidden risk, where execution depth does not yet match the growth plan, and where key-person dependency is concentrated in ways that compound under stress.

The Work That Shaped This

OSCA was built from forty years of direct engagements. The arc began with operational recovery work in the early 1980s, deepened through five years at Remploy and eight years inside the Bullough international manufacturing and engineering conglomerate, and broadened across a sequence of senior commercial and transformation roles in the UK and European technology sector. These included the InTechnology managed services business, Allasso (the European IT security business, exited successfully to a German distributor), and a global mobile technology business. The Achilles engagement, spanning several years across a large supply-chain services business, became the foundation of David's most consequential intellectual work, the methodology now published as The 7 Pillars: Strategies for Business Breakthrough (2024). OSCA followed, building on that foundation to address a question The 7 Pillars left open: why operationally capable businesses still fail to deliver the value their plans promise.

Outside the Boardroom

David is a family man with four children, a hill-walker, and a painter. His watercolour memoir, Beyond Canvas: A Visual Memoir in Watercolour and Light, was published in 2025. His faith-based values shape the way he works with clients: a preference for sustainable growth over short-term extraction, for honest diagnostic over flattering presentation, and for relationships built on the assumption that the businesses he assesses are stewarded by people doing genuinely difficult work. Forty years of fixing businesses has taught him that the operational questions and the human questions are rarely separable, and that the work tends to go better when neither is treated as secondary to the other.
